Sunnyfields Primary School scoop Richard Bailey Memorial Trophy in another successful exclusive partner school event

03 June 2025

The annual Richard Bailey Memorial Trophy took place earlier last month, an exclusive event for Club Doncaster Foundation’s partner schools, with lots of Year 5’s & Year 6’s embarking on the Eco-Power Stadium, in the hopes of taking home the trophy.

On what was a glorious day, participants arrived to an action packed schedule of football matches, along with creative and informative workshops.

Children took part in a chair based exercise session with participants from the Foundation’s weekly Age UK Walk & Talk session, to raise awareness of dementia and encouraging action for the Dementia Action Week.

Schools also got the opportunity to showcase their artistic skills by putting pen to paper to design a football kit for their school, with the best design chosen by staff members, to be turned into a real kit, for the school to use for future tournaments and events, followed by a knife crime awareness workshop delivered by Ant, from Always An Alternative.

School teachers in attendance also took part in their own mini workshop, by experiencing blind football, as their school children watched on from the stands.

After an incredible day of football, with plenty of skills and sportsmanship on show, Sunnyfields Primary School who were the winners on the day, after beating the runners up in the final, in a tense penalty shootout.

Tom Butterworth, Youth Engagement Manager, spoke about how pleased he was with the day: “We’ve welcomed schools from across Doncaster, to the Eco-Power Stadium for an exclusive event. We’ve just celebrated promotion and been crowned champions of League Two, but they get to work in different workshops.

“They’ll take away lots of memories from the day, but they’ll also hopefully be inspired too. These children have been able to see lots of different roles taking place at a football stadium, we’ve been able to show them in and around the stadium.

“It’s fantastic to see all the partner schools here in one place, interacting with each other and all of the Foundation delivery team too. It gives teachers the chance to meet other teachers and be able to bounce ideas and best practice off of each other.

“Children get to meet new friends from across the city, enhancing their social skills and giving them vital experiences as they move forward within their school life.”

Simon Wilson, PE Lead at Atlas Academy, said how the experience of the day will stay with his school children for life: “Our children have been looking forward to this for months and months. This event is the highlight of their year.

“It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity, to step on the field at Doncaster Rovers, thanks to our partnership we have with the Foundation.

“It’s a memory, being able to tell their family that they’ve played on a professional pitch. It’ll be one that they’ll remember for a long time.

“Sport brings people together and this exclusive event does that.”
