A group of NCS Doncaster participants have helped transform a local Doncaster boxing gym as part of their social action project.
Using paint supplied by Club Doncaster Foundation’s Fit Rovers project, and decorator Alan Bell, the group have given a new lease of life to Lindholme Community Gym in Hatfield Woodhouse.
The work will hopefully attract new customers and saves the business a significant amount of time and money.
Team leader of the NCS project, Lauren Cuttell commented:
“I can’t fault the enthusiasm of this group, they have really got stuck into painting the gym and even after one day, you can see what a difference it is making.
“We spent much of the second week of the NCS programme planning the social action project and the young people made all the arrangements themselves, so I’m very proud of their hard work.
"We will also be raising money for the gym's charity, 'The Spirit of Freedom Project' on Thursday, as we cycle 11 miles from the gym back to our base at the Keepmoat Stadium. We have borrowed bikes for all the group free of charge through Club Doncaster Foundation's bike library and hope that it will be as successul as the painting."
Fit Rovers course facilitator, Nick Gillott added:
“We are delighted to cover the cost of the paint with the help of Alan, it’s such a great social action idea and one that’s close to home.
“Owner of the gym, Jimmy delivers a mental health workshop on one of the weeks in our free men’s health programme, Fit Rovers, so it’s fantastic that we can give something back through the NCS programme.”
The project has sparked the interest of local stores and the media, with the Thorne Times travelling to the gym to cover the story and local store, B&M offering £10 towards the cost of the paint.
It becomes just one of the many community projects that have been delivered across the summer by almost 700 young people from Doncaster, all on their NCS journey.
NCS is a three-week programme facilitated by Club Doncaster Foundation, allowing young people the chance to explore the Lake District, learn new workplace skills and take a lead on an exciting community project.
