Active IQ Level 2 Diploma in Active Leisure and Health & Fitness (includes Fitness Instructor & Personal Trainer Qualifications)

Course Description

The health and fitness pathway includes two qualifications over a two year period; Level 2 Diploma in Active Leisure and Level 2 Diploma in Health & Fitness. They provide learners with the essential knowledge and skills required by those who wish to pursue a career as a fitness instructor and/or personal trainer. They give learners the opportunity to gain nationally accredited qualifications which provide the essential knowledge, skills and personal qualities required for an occupation in the Health and Fitness sector.

The course pathway allows for natural progression onto level 3 study. 

Course Structure & Content

September 2018 to July 2019 - Up to 3.5 days per week

Entry requirements

Four GCSEs at grade D or above, including English Language and Maths. Level 1 qualification e.g. completion of BTEC Level 1 Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure or Diploma in Progression. The course requires physical exertion and individual participation is essential therefore, a degree of physical fitness is necessary. 

Career Prospects

Opportunities exist to enter careers including; fitness instruction, outdoor activities, sports coaching, sport and exercise science, leisure management, and leisure operational services. Each learner on the will have the chance to apply for the Level 2 Diploma in Health & Fitness (including Personal Training qualification) upon successful completion of Year 1.

Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Sports Media (Creative Digital Media Production)

Course Description

this qualification is designed for post-16 learners who want to study media related degree courses at university or be employed within the media industry. Learners will gain knowledge and understanding of creative digital media production and develop an understanding of how to work within the media industries. Working alongside our professional football and rugby league clubs, students will have the opportunity to report on live sport, compiling match reports and filming interviews. The course will also contain one-off specialist sessions from industry professionals such as; sports photography, commentary and reporting on extended match highlights.

September 2018 to July 2019 - Up to 4 days per week

The programme consists of the following units:

  • Working in the creative media industry
  • Digital media skills
  • Specialist subject investigation
  • Advertising production
  • News production
  • Single camera techniques

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 4-9 (A-C), including English and Maths. Candidates must possess good levels of written and oral communication and have an interest in pursuing a career in media. 

Career Prospects

Following on from the qualification, learners can follow the digital production and social media route, or they can chose to follow an endorsed route in film, television and radio or interactive publishing and media at university. 

Level 3 BTEC 90 Credit / Extended Diploma in Sport

Course Description

This unique pathway has been put together to give learners the chance to develop their employment opportunities within professional sport. The course is designed to provide individuals with the knowledge and understanding of a number of science based and sport units. Based at Club Doncaster Sports College at the Keepmoat Stadium, home to Doncaster Rovers FC and The Dons Rugby League Club, learners are able to study at the state of the art classrooms and 3G astro-turf pitches boasted by the Stadium to offer both theory and practical sessions.

September 2017 to July 2018 - Up to 4 days per week

  • Psychology of Sport
  • Fitness Testing
  • Nutrition for Sports Performance
  • Practical Team Sport

  • Work Experience

Entry Requirements

Five GCSEs at grade C or above, including maths and English Language or a Level 2 BTEC in Diploma in Sport. Assessments are internally assessed by the course tutors and learners will be required to keep a portfolio of evidence of work. The method of learning is a mixture of both tutor led and practical sessions, learners are required to fully participate in both classroom based and practical activities.


The BTEC level 3 will give you the foundation for entry into University as it is worth up to 168 UCAS points for those who achieve a D* D* D*. Successful learners may also apply for a wide range of jobs within the sport & leisure industry such as: Health & Lifestyle Services, Health & Fitness Facilities, Coaching, Teaching, Professional Sport & Performance, Health Promotion, Community Development Officers and Sports Development Officer.

HND Sport & Exercise Sciences


The BTEC Higher National Diploma (HND) in Sport and Exercise Sciences is a two year, full-time programme. On successful completion of the HNC Higher National Certificate (HNC) in the first year, you will have the opportunity to progress onto the HND in Sport and Exercise Sciences which aims to provide the opportunity to undertake a course with a specialist vocational context. The programme will provide students with a higher level of contextualised awareness of sport and exercise science.

Our goal is to prepare you for a successful career within the sport and exercise science industry. Some students may then undertake further study to complete a full honours degree which is currently available at Selby College. This programme is delivered at Club Doncaster Sports College and Selby College.


Building on previous knowledge and skills in the field of sports, the course is structured to provide opportunities across a broad academic and vocational base, progressively deepening learners’ knowledge. Particular emphasis is placed on ensuring that students are able to effectively apply their knowledge to relevant practical situations.

48 UCAS tariff points (NEW UCAS TARIFF) from either:

  • BTEC level 3 Extended Diploma (QCF) in Sport or Sport & Exercise Science or a related subject
  • A Levels (including Physical Education or a related subject)

The following are also required:

  • Satisfactory references
  • An Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check
  • Grade C or above in GCSE English, Maths and Science is desirable.
