CDSC Dons Academy looking forward to new academic year

Club Doncaster Sports College have teamed up with The Dons to offer students aged 16-19 the chance to study, train and play as part of The Dons Academy.

Going into its third season, the Dons Academy have enjoyed success in player development and performance amongst the likes of Leeds, Pontefract and Wyke.

With Category 3 status, this programme is a specialist extra-curricular that will run alongside the learners’ academic qualifications, training up to 5 hours each week on top of full-time study.

Delighted with the prospect of another year of success, Doncaster Rugby League CEO, Carl Hall said: “The work that the college do through the Dons Academy is brilliant; it’s a fantastic set up that replicates that of the first team and I think that’s reflected in the success stories of some of the students.”

He continued: “My dream for this set up is that someone from Club Doncaster Sports College works their way up through the ranks and ends up playing for The Dons first team and beyond. With the rate that the programme is developing, I think that could happen in the very near future.”

Success stories from the college include Kieran Cotes, a BTEC Level 3 student who was invited to train with the 1st team. He joins Morgan Monaghan in the CDSC hall of fame, who is now moving onto the Higher National Diploma with Selby College, hosted by Club Doncaster Sports College after graduating with the highest possible grade.

He commented:  ‘The Sports College have given me an opportunity to develop my game and play in a competitive league and I have ended up with an amazing grade, meaning I can study on the HNC and continue playing rugby league. I’m looking forward to the next season to see the team develop further and hopefully play on the Keepmoat Stadium pitch.”

If you have a passion for rugby or willingness to try and learn some new skills then this could be for you. Anyone studying full-time with the Sports College can participate and be part of the squad with the chance to be trained by Doncaster RLFC first team coaches and members of the current Dons playing squad.

This is a unique opportunity for players to represent College and Doncaster RLFC to compete against other colleges within the Yorkshire region with the opportunity to be selected for the Dons first team.
